When you look at the makeup of the two teams in this game, you’ll quickly notice that they are pass-first teams. They both have solid defenses, but opportunities to be exploited. Jordan Love leads the Packers and Bryce Young leads the Panthers. However, tonight might be one of the games where the running games will have the edge. Let’s see how the running games stack up.
The Carolina Panthers have run the ball 146 times this season with almost 100 of those carries going to their primary running back, Chuba Hubbard. He is involved in the passing game as well as the fifth most targeted player on the roster. He has two scores through the air, and four on the ground. He is also averaging about five yards per carry. The Packers are a middle-of-the-pack rushing defense, so Hubbard should have some room to operate.
The Green Bay Packers are certainly looking to move the ball through the air. They have thrown the ball almost double the amount that they have run the ball. Without Josh Jacobs, who was having off-field issues, the team turned to Marshawn Lloyd as the primary back. He has about a third of the total rushes for the team. There have been 10 different runners for the Packers this season, and only three touchdowns. Lloyd has two touchdowns, and Love has the other. Jacobs being back in the mix makes this backfield a bit more dynamic, and the Panthers have the worst running defense in football. That means this could be a big game for Jacobs.
Running games are important for every team, but both of these clubs want to throw the ball. Hubbard and Jacobs give each team a good chance to control the clock, and even potentially the field position in this one.
