Chris Janson isn’t losing any sleep over people who get upset when he posts photos from his hunting trips.
And if you’ve spent any time on social media lately, you know those people aren’t particularly hard to find.

Anti-hunters always seem to find their way into the comments section when someone posts a photo of a successful hunt. But the trolls really come out of the woodwork when that hunter happens to be a country music star.
Just ask Cody Johnson, who faced backlash over a grizzly bear hunt in Alaska earlier this year. Johnson defended the hunt as a conservation effort, explaining the role of predator management in protecting other wildlife, including moose and caribou.
Then there was Jordan Davis, who caught heat for harvesting an axis deer in Hawaii. Never mind that axis deer are an invasive species that can wreak havoc on the islands’ native ecosystems.
And most recently, old hunting photos of Ella Langley resurfaced online, prompting some critics to call for the “Choosin’ Texas” singer to be canceled.
So, what does Janson think about all of this?
Well, not much, actually. Because unlike the rest of us, the “Buy Me a Boat” singer has figured out the secret to a happier existence: Stay off social media and don’t read the comments.
“I don’t watch much internet. I don’t watch much TV,” Janson told OutKick OutDoors. “I hunt and fish and raise kids and love my wife.”
Amen to that.

Janson said he hadn’t seen the controversy involving Langley, but he’s certainly familiar with the criticism that comes with being a hunter in the public eye.
“If you’re in the public spotlight, no matter if it’s me, Jordan, Cody, it doesn’t matter who it is, you better be ready for arrows to come against you and just build your shield up,” he said.
“I don’t really care what people think. I want them to like me. I think everybody wants someone to like them, but if they don’t, that’s okay too.”
Janson said his wife, Kelly, and his team handle much of his social media, allowing him to steer clear of the negativity. And frankly, he figures people will find something to complain about no matter what he does.
Post a photo of a Ford truck, and the Chevy fans are upset. Drive a Chevy, and the Dodge guys have something to say.
You get the idea.
While Janson isn’t particularly concerned about what strangers on the internet think of his hunting habits, he does wish more people understood everything that goes into responsible hunting.
“Who doesn’t love a big rack on a great big elk or a big whitetail? And who doesn’t love holding up a big fish in a picture?” he said. “But I’m also a conservation guy.”
For starters, Janson hunts for food, and much of that food actually ends up on someone else’s dinner table.
“Every animal that I’ve harvested, at least this year, at least 50% of it has gone to someone else to help somebody,” he said. “And that’s a big part of why I hunt.”
Regulated hunting also plays an important role in wildlife management across the United States. Hunting license fees and federal excise taxes on firearms, ammunition and archery equipment help fund habitat restoration, wildlife research and conservation programs. And in some areas, hunting is an important tool for managing animal populations and reducing damage to native ecosystems.
In other words, there’s often a whole lot more to that grip-and-grin photo than meets the eye.
Janson’s commitment to conservation extends beyond his own time in the woods.
Since 2019, he’s partnered with Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris on a signature conservation hat, with proceeds benefiting three nonprofit organizations: Tennessee Hunters for the Hungry, Tennessee Riverkeeper and the Harpeth Conservancy.
Through the Tennessee Wildlife Federation’s Hunters for the Hungry program, hunters can donate harvested deer to participating processors, who prepare the venison for distribution to food banks and other organizations serving people in need.
The other two organizations focus on protecting waterways and aquatic ecosystems, including the Harpeth River, where Janson lives.
“I have a very close connection with it,” Janson said of the Harpeth. “Lots of Native American history there, and just the best hunting grounds you could ever imagine.”

And he’s taken that same give-back approach into other business partnerships.
Through Crav’n Flavor, Janson helps recognize peer-nominated hometown heroes with grocery assistance and gift cards. He’s also teamed up with agricultural seed company Pioneer on its “Hats Off to Farmers” initiative, which raises money for Rural Minds, a nonprofit providing mental health resources to farmers and rural communities.
The partnerships may support different causes, but Janson sees them as part of the same commitment to giving back.
For him, hunting and conservation aren’t just about what happens in the woods. They’re about taking care of the land, the wildlife and the people who depend on both.
As for the critics, Janson isn’t interested in arguing with them.
“For any haters out there on social media, I would just encourage them to try it,” he said. “If you haven’t, you can’t knock it.”
“The hunting thing may not be your thing, and I understand that. But the fishing thing, you can throw a fish back, and there’s nothing like catching a great big fish or even a small fish. It’s fun.”

Sure beats griping at strangers on the internet.
