I’ve watched plenty of car unveilings over the years, but Tesla’s latest Roadster demonstration had me doing a double take. A sleek white sports car climbed a towering curved ramp until it was completely upside down. Then it launched into the air, flipped over and landed safely back on the pavement. And that was only part of the show. Tesla also demonstrated acceleration from zero to 60 mph in a claimed 0.81 seconds. After nearly nine years of waiting, Elon Musk finally showed the world what his redesigned Roadster can do. Now comes the bigger question. Will Tesla actually deliver it?

FLYING SPORTS CAR HIDES ITS WINGS AS PRODUCTION GETS CLOSER
On Oct. 15, 2026, Tesla unveiled its redesigned Roadster at SpaceX’s rocket testing facility in McGregor, Texas. The event brought together engineers from both companies to demonstrate technology more commonly associated with spacecraft. During the demonstration, a Roadster prototype accelerated up a massive curved ramp. A powerful suction system helped keep the vehicle attached as it climbed upside down. Once it reached the top, compressed-gas thrusters propelled it into the air. The vehicle then rotated in midair and landed back on its wheels.
Tesla followed that stunt with another impressive maneuver. The Roadster lifted off the ground and flew over a lineup of Tesla vehicles, including a Cybercab, Cybertruck, Tesla Semi, Model Y and Model 3. Nobody was inside the Roadster during these high-risk demonstrations. Musk said Tesla used automated controls to avoid putting anyone in danger. Tesla shared footage of the event on its official X account. You can also watch the full Tesla Roadster unveiling on YouTube.
Here’s where the engineering gets especially interesting. Tesla worked with SpaceX to develop a system that uses highly compressed gas to generate thrust. Unlike conventional rocket engines, these cold-gas thrusters don’t burn fuel. Instead, they release pressurized gas through nozzles to push the vehicle in a particular direction. The Roadster also uses four powerful electric fans positioned near the rear of the car. They pull air from underneath the vehicle to create suction. That increases the force pressing the tires against the surface, helping the car maintain grip even while upside down. Tesla also uses a ground-sealing system to help maintain suction underneath the vehicle.
Meanwhile, the thrusters handle a very different job. Four rear-mounted nozzles provide extra forward acceleration. The most advanced Rocket configuration adds six more thrusters positioned around the vehicle to help control movement in the air. According to Tesla engineering executive Lars Moravy, the standard thruster setup uses a 200-liter high-pressure storage vessel behind the seats. The Rocket configuration adds another 400 liters of storage capacity, bringing the total to approximately 600 liters. That additional equipment takes up the passenger seat area.
There’s also a practical limitation that gets lost in the excitement. According to Tesla engineering executive Lars Moravy, refilling the Rocket prototype’s entire 600-liter high-pressure gas storage system currently takes approximately six to seven hours. Tesla hopes to cut that time significantly. So while the demonstration was extraordinary, the Roadster’s brief airborne maneuvers are a long way from sustained flight like an airplane. Inside, Tesla has taken a different approach to the driving experience. The Roadster features a steer-by-wire yoke that electronically transmits steering inputs. Tesla also uses lightweight materials, including magnesium and carbon fiber, along with a fixed seat base to reduce weight. Meanwhile, Track Mode lowers the suspension so drivers can adjust the car for more aggressive handling.
Tesla has made some extraordinary performance claims about the Roadster, and its latest unveiling added another. During the event, Tesla showed a thruster-assisted acceleration run that it said took the prototype from zero to 60 mph in approximately 0.81 seconds. That’s remarkably quick, even compared with some of the fastest electric supercars.
However, the result came from Tesla’s own demonstration. Independent testing has yet to verify that acceleration figure on a production vehicle. Tesla also claims the Roadster’s more powerful configurations can exceed 230 mph. Musk went even further during the unveiling, suggesting engineers eventually want to reach half the speed of sound. That would be roughly 380 mph, depending on atmospheric conditions. For now, that more ambitious target remains an aspiration rather than a demonstrated capability. Tesla also projects more than 300 miles of driving range on a charge. That’s a substantial reduction from the approximately 620 miles promised when the second-generation Roadster was first introduced in 2017. At the time, Tesla also envisioned a four-seat sports car.
FLYING TAXIS ARE TAKING OFF IN TEXAS. IS YOUR CITY NEXT?
Here’s something worth knowing before getting too excited about the flying demonstration. Tesla offers a road-focused Performance configuration, along with two more extreme options called Thrust and Rocket. Each adds capabilities that take the Roadster further beyond a conventional electric sports car.
The Performance version is designed for conventional road driving. It seats two people and features active aerodynamics along with the advanced suction system. Tesla claims it can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under 1.6 seconds without the rocket-style thrusters.
The Thrust configuration takes acceleration considerably further. It adds four rear-mounted cold-gas thrusters to the two-seat design. Tesla claims this version can reach 60 mph in under 0.9 seconds. The company describes it as race-ready and plans a limited release.
The Rocket version is the one that really pushes the technology. It uses 10 thrusters to provide forward acceleration, upward movement and airborne maneuvering. Tesla claims this configuration could reach 60 mph in under 0.59 seconds. However, all that additional equipment requires a compromise. The Rocket version seats only one person and will be available by invitation. Tesla also explicitly warns that it has not received approval for public road use.
Musk acknowledged that safety wasn’t necessarily the top priority when developing the Roadster’s most extreme capabilities. He also expressed uncertainty about where those features would be legal to use. For now, Tesla has only demonstrated the airborne maneuvers under controlled conditions. Keep in mind that these acceleration figures are Tesla’s projected specifications. They have yet to be independently confirmed on production vehicles.
This is where potential buyers should pay close attention. When Tesla originally announced the second-generation Roadster in 2017, it discussed a starting price of approximately $200,000. However, Tesla did not announce a new final purchase price at its October 2026 unveiling. Instead, the company reopened reservations with substantial upfront payments. For the Performance version, Tesla requires an initial $5,000 payment followed by another $45,000 within 10 days. That brings the total reservation payment to $50,000.
The limited-release Thrust version requires the same initial $5,000 payment. However, buyers must then provide another $245,000 within 10 days. That’s a total reservation payment of $250,000, even though the vehicle’s final purchase price remains unknown. Tesla has not disclosed pricing for the invitation-only Rocket configuration.
According to Tesla’s official Roadster Reservation Agreement, a reservation secures an approximate place in line rather than a completed vehicle order. Tesla says customers can cancel their reservations and receive a full refund until they complete their vehicle configuration after Tesla invites them to do so. However, the money won’t be held separately in escrow or earn interest.
There’s another important detail. Tesla explicitly states that the Roadster remains under development and that it cannot guarantee when a vehicle will be delivered, or whether it will be delivered at all. And Tesla has already missed its original deadline by several years. The company initially expected deliveries to begin in 2020. Musk now says production should begin in 2028, although that remains a target rather than a guaranteed date.
Here’s something else that caught my attention. Musk suggested the Roadster could be among Tesla’s last cars designed for human drivers. Think about that for a moment. Tesla is spending billions developing cars that drive themselves, yet its most exciting new vehicle is designed for people who actually love being behind the wheel. I find that pretty ironic, especially coming from the man who wants to make autonomous driving the norm.
Just look at Tesla’s Cybercab. It doesn’t even have a steering wheel or traditional driving controls. We’ve already seen how Tesla’s Cybercab is carrying riders in Austin, although questions about safety and operating restrictions remain. Meanwhile, the Roadster is all about the thrill of driving. There’s something to be said for feeling the car respond when you hit the accelerator or take a sharp turn. Of course, Musk hasn’t confirmed that Tesla will eliminate manual driving from its other vehicles. But if that’s where the company is headed, I wonder how many drivers will be willing to give up the steering wheel.
You probably aren’t planning to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a Tesla Roadster. Still, this project raises some interesting questions about where automotive technology could be headed. For starters, the Roadster’s advanced suction system demonstrates how electric fans can dramatically increase traction. Similar technology already exists in specialized high-performance vehicles. Further development could eventually influence other types of performance cars.
However, the cold-gas thrusters introduce challenges that may limit their usefulness outside controlled environments. The hardware occupies valuable space, while the pressurized gas supply requires replenishment after use. There’s also the gap between demonstrating a prototype and delivering a finished vehicle. Tesla still needs to prove the Roadster can be manufactured reliably and meet applicable regulations.
For anyone considering a reservation, I would take a close look at Tesla’s current Roadster information and reservation terms before paying. The company’s specifications are still subject to change, and the Roadster shown at the unveiling remains a prototype.
I have to give Tesla credit for getting my attention with this one. Watching a sports car drive upside down and then launch itself into the air was pretty incredible. And knowing that engineers from Tesla and SpaceX worked together to pull it off makes the technology even more interesting. But here’s what I’m watching. Tesla first showed us the next-generation Roadster back in 2017, and customers are still waiting. Now we’re hearing 2028. I’d love to see this car actually make it into production because there’s something refreshing about an electric sports car designed for people who still love to drive. But asking customers to put down as much as $250,000 without a final price or guaranteed delivery date is a lot to swallow. As much as I’d love to take one for a spin, I think I’ll leave those midair flips to the engineers until Tesla can prove this technology belongs outside a controlled demonstration.
Would you trust a car that can launch itself into the air and perform a midair flip, or has Elon Musk finally pushed automotive technology too far? Let us know by writing to us at Cyberguy.com
