In Game 1, Tampa struck first, getting two runs in the first inning, and that looked like it might be enough as starter Drew Rasmussen was racking up scoreless innings. Rasmussen was dealing and kept the Guardians off the board until the sixth inning, when he allowed a homer. He allowed another in the seventh and was bounced from the game.
The Guardians then found a way to score another five runs in the final two frames of the game. The Rays scored another run in the bottom of the eighth, making the score 4-3 in favor of Cleveland. It proved not to be enough, and the Guardians’ insurance runs in the top of the ninth put the game out of reach. Cleveland won, 7-3.
Game 2 was more Tampa Bay’s speed. The Rays got an absolute gem from starting pitcher Freddy Peralta, kept the Guardians off the board consistently and came through with timely hits of their own. Most of the Rays’ success came after an error from Jose Ramirez. That led to the first run of the game, and a single later scored another two runs.
Chase DeLauter hit an RBI double to right field, and the Guardians had the tying runs on base but couldn’t get them in. The Guardians wasted a good start from Parker Messick, and the Rays evened up the series.
The Rays got the win they needed in Game 2, and the Guardians split the series — the goal they had when visiting Tampa. Who will claim the upper hand in Game 3?
