In case you were feeling particularly productive and accomplished today, a man named Dale “Grey Beard” Sanders is about to humble you.
At 91-years-old, Sanders officially reclaimed his title Monday as the oldest person ever to complete a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail, finishing his journey atop Mount Katahdin in Maine.
And before we go any further, understand that hiking the Appalachian Trail is an extraordinary feat for any hiker — let alone someone with nine decades under his belt.

The AT stretches roughly 2,200 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Katahdin in Maine, crossing 14 states along the way. According to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, hikers who complete the whole thing experience about 464,500 feet of elevation gain— and an equal amount of loss.
That combined 929,000 feet of elevation change is equal to going from sea level to the top of Mount Everest and back roughly 16 times.
And here I was proud of myself for taking the stairs at the airport.
The distance alone is obviously absurd, but mileage is only part of what makes the AT such a beast.
Unlike some long-distance trails that offer extended stretches of relatively forgiving terrain, the AT spends much of its length going relentlessly up and down the Appalachian Mountains. Hikers contend with steep climbs, boulder fields, exposed roots, mud, stream crossings and rocks upon rocks upon rocks.

Then you reach New Hampshire’s White Mountains and Maine, where the trail gets particularly rude.
Southern Maine and the Whites are considered among the most difficult portions of the AT, with steep ascents and descents and rugged terrain. And before hikers can officially call themselves finishers on a northbound journey, they still have to deal with Katahdin — a mountain that requires more than 4,000 feet of climbing and stretches of scrambling over boulders and ledges.
Consider that the grand finale. And Sanders did it at 91 years old.
According to the Associated Press, he fell just 200 yards from the finish. It was his 71st fall of the journey. Six of those were what Sanders considered “hard falls,” including one that eventually resulted in a brief hospitalization.
Here’s where the story gets crazier.
Sanders didn’t just break the Appalachian Trail age record. He reclaimed his own record.
Back in 2017, Grey Beard completed the trail at age 82, becoming the oldest person to do it at the time. His record stood until 2021, when his friend M.J. “Nimblewill Nomad” Eberhart finished at 83.

Sanders actually helped Eberhart during that record-setting hike, joining his friend for some difficult stretches when Eberhart was considering quitting.
But then, Sanders decided he wanted his title back.
He started this latest attempt from Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, on Sept. 6, 2025, hiking south toward Georgia before taking the winter off. He returned in the spring and headed north from Harpers Ferry toward Maine, targeting about 12 miles per day with one rest day each week. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy allows thru-hikers to complete sections in different orders and take breaks, provided the entire trail is completed within a year.
Sanders finished in 359 days.
Fun fact: Sanders was born in 1935. The Appalachian Trail wasn’t completed until 1937.
The man is literally older than the trail he just hiked.
Sanders has spent his later years collecting endurance accomplishments that would exhaust most people half his age. He has paddled the entire Mississippi River — more than once — and became the oldest person to complete the trip when he did it at 87. He’s also set an age record on the Grand Canyon’s grueling rim-to-rim-to-rim route.
Still, this Appalachian Trail attempt wasn’t easy even by Grey Beard standards.
During a June descent of Vermont’s Killington Mountain, Sanders went down in a boulder field hard enough to bloody his arms and legs. Weeks later, numbness in his left arm sent him to a hospital, where what was initially feared to be a stroke turned out to be a pinched nerve. He briefly considered abandoning the attempt before eventually returning to finish the job.
So, fellow adventurers, the next time you’re 20 minutes into a hike, staring at a switchback and wondering whether you really need to see what’s at the top, just remember Grey Beard.
Because if a 91-year-old man can hike the entire Appalachian Trail, we’re officially out of excuses.
